for what we now have a dedicated #️⃣ hashtag #DoItYourself, our 'Father of the Nation' 👓🦯 had already emphasized it during his lifetime as 'अपना काम स्वयं करो' 😇.. also popular in its short form DIY, do-it-yourself is trending today 📈 over social networks 📶.. but in the hiking fraternity, this has stronger and finer roots..

as of today, there are more than 200 trekking clubs ♣️ in पुणे.. some may have died out but many are still actively organizing trekking ⛰️ and related activities 🏕️ in and around पुणे (district).. as far as I know, the pioneers 🏁 of all this were founded about 40 years ago.. please pardon my ignorance, if there is / are any older organizations, I am not aware of.. before that (40 years ago), trekking was probably only a scarce hobby categorized under DIY 🤠.. we too, today, prefer it that way, exceptions being range treks, technical treks and heritage treks.. राहतं काय?, तर simplest and most practiced of all 'out and back' hikings..

when it comes to DIY, it takes a lot of courage and going against the will 😐 to plan one in this area, at least for us, who not just have to tolerate the suburban traffic from नारायणगाव to नाशिक फाटा, but also further stretch till वडगाव bridge, via either चांदणी चौक ➕ or दांडेकर पूल 🌉.. that's the only con we have to maintain.. on the pros side, we enjoy self-governance 🤗, and are practically independent of any strangely unmatched stamina(s) of unfamiliar participant(s) 🤐.. from a different perspective - less variables lead to better planning in achieving desired targets 🎯.. don't agree? because you believe in / have heard of 'the best things happen unexpectedly'?.. but so do the worst, don't they? 🤨.. now, let's get back to #DoItYourself..

exiting आपली पुणे, rather PCMC, from the North ⬆️, we were on our way to our breakfast pit-stop, the very familiar and famous आकाश (GMaps location), equidistant from पुणे or नाशिक.. काहीतरी चुकतय 🤔? that's the funny part.. actually, it takes the same time to reach here, from पुणे or from नाशिक, though the distribution of the distance on both of its side is amazingly unequal.. बजरंग / श्रीराज नाही? hold on..

soon, we were on our way to base village करंजाळे via नारायणगाव, ओझर and ओतूर.. airport 🛫 वाला ओझर नाही, अष्टविनायक वाला ओझर.. आणि, कळवण वाला ओतूर नाही, जुन्नर वाला ओतूर.. if you are planning any treks in this region, this one 🛣️ is a better 👍 option than the popularly opted one via आळेफाटा.. midway, we did admire the view of our original plan, disputing small over identity of its natural bridge, a long pending one, and still a todo, हटकेश्वर..

I'd been to नळीची वाट trek 🧗 some 3 years ago.. then had met today's first ☝️ companion, राहुल, for the first time.. a week before that, today's second ✌️ companion, वैभव.. mentioning this here, because the moment we reached the small restaurant where we were to park 🚗 today, we realized it being the same 'high tea' spot from that return journey (3 years ago).. it was also to be our today's (early) lunch point after returning from सिंदोळा / before proceeding to latter target.. we started towards the former one with the hypothetical ideas on the directions ↗️ ↖️, profoundly aided by the trail marked on AllTrails app and the kml downloaded 📩 from IndiaHikes web 🕸️.. while it required some ups-and-downs to get to the ridge to be followed till the traverse, we did manage not to waste (time ⏱️) significantly..

high tea ☕ - those who don't know / already know what 'high tea' is, this is my version of understanding of the term.. tea consumed during a meeting or working hours 🕓, is called 'afternoon tea', which may or may not be with snacks.. tea consumed after a meeting or work hours 🕕, with heavier snacks, is termed as 'high tea'.. I may be wrong, but as said, this is just my version..

ascend to the last resort was via a col, start of which was supposed to be traversed away from this ridge, and was nowhere to be seen 😒, just yet.. we did have trail but the actual experiences can / do vary 🤦.. finally, the left side 👈 revealed itself and after executing the part of walking flat for a while, we soon were ascending towards the top, watching some tiny cave-like structures pass by.. with a Lord Ganesha + one more idol, some empty and some non-empty but non-potable water cisterns at the top, there is nothing much to explore 🙄.. however, this is well compensated by the surrounding views of पिंपळगाव जोगा dam, हरिश्चंद्रगड, उधळ्या, भोजगिरी, वनदेव, निमगिरी, म्हशेडी, हडसर etc.. did we know them all? not really.. we were enlightened about them in second half by विनीत दाते.. but right now, we were miserably wrong in even guessing half of these - almost identified one as जीवधन (please don't tell anybody 🤫).. video 🎥 shot and edited by वैभव till here (सिंदोळा), https://youtu.be/yjXmXAWYYiM

परत आल्यावर early lunch 🧆 करून, आम्ही पुढच्या किल्ल्याकडे.. पायथ्याला पोहचत करत "गाडीनेच गडमाथ्यावर जातो" असं वाटत होतं.. निमगिरी मोठा नाही, हे ऐकून होतो, पण अगदी पर्वती सारखा पण नको ना!.. trail च्या starting point ला एक घर 🏠 आणि घराबाहेर आजी 👵 दिसल्या.. "चाळीस वीरगळ कुठे आहेत?" विचारलं तर त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर 'एखाद्या alien 👽 बद्दल विचारलं', असा भाव 😕 दिसला.. असो, त्या परिसरात काहीतरी वेगळं म्हणत असतील.. Maps वर असलेल्या pin 📌 च्या दिशेने आम्ही वर चढायला सुरुवात केली (GMaps location).. वाटेत हेमाडपंथी मंदिराचे पडलेले अवशेष दिसतात ज्याच्या बाजूला एका दगडावर विष्णू-लक्ष्मी / शंकर-पार्वती ची कोरलेली मूर्ती पण बघायला मिळते.. जवळच एक विहीर आहे.. थोडं पुढे काळूबाई मातेचे मंदिर, आणि इथून उजवीकडे आहेत चाळीस वीरगळ, सोबत हनुमानाचे मंदिर..

वीरगळ - वीरगळ म्हणजे वीर पुरुषांच्या 💂 स्मरणार्थ उभारण्यात आलेला स्तंभ, जो सहसा दगडांचा 🗿 (क्वचित लाकडाचा) असतो.. यास 'वीरस्तंभ' असेही म्हणतात.. महाराष्ट्रात शक्यतो जुन्या देवळांच्या 🏚️ बाहेर वीरगळ आढळतात.. ही परंपरा कर्नाटकातून महाराष्ट्रात आली असावी जिथे मोठे-मोठे वीरगळ आढळून येतात, ज्यातील काही शिलालेखांनीही युक्त आहेत.. पण महाराष्ट्रात असे शिलालेख कोरलेले वीरगळ तुलनेने कमी 🤏 आहेत..

कानडी भाषेत कळ्ळू म्हणजे दगड.. कळ्ळू चा अपभ्रंश गळ्ळू झाला.. आणि ह्यातूनच वीरगळ हा शब्द तयार झाला, वीर + गळ्ळू = वीरगळ = वीरांचा दगड 🙋‍♂️.. साधारणपणे अडीच किंवा तीन फूट दगडावर एकावर एक या पद्धतीने तीन किंवा चार चौकोन खोदलेले असतात.. सर्वात खालच्या भागात वीर युद्धात लढत 🤺 आहे, असे दाखवलेले असते.. यातून लढाईचे कारण सुद्धा स्पष्ट होते.. उदा. गाईसाठी लढाई 🐄, घोड्यासाठी लढाई 🐎 इ... मधल्या भागात वीर देवदूत 🧝 किंवा अप्सरांच्या 👸 बरोबर स्वर्गात जात असल्याचे म्हणजेच वीराचा मृत्यू झाल्याचे दाखवलेले असते.. सर्वात वरच्या भागात वीर योद्धा कैलास पर्वताला 🏔️ गेला आहे आणि शंकराच्या पिंडीची पूजा करत आहे, असे दाखवलेले असते.. युद्धात मरण आल्यास स्वर्गलोकप्राप्ती होते असे यातून सुचवायचे असावे..

काही वीरगळ हे 🌛 चंद्र सूर्य 🌞 यांनी अंकित असतात.. आकाशात चंद्र सूर्य तळपत आहेत तोपर्यंत या वीरांची स्मृती 🧠 कायम राहिल असे यातून सूचित करायचे असावे.. वीरगळवर कोणाचेही नाव नसते, फक्त चित्रे कोरलेली असतात.. त्यावरून त्या वीराचे वीरकृत्य समजून येते..

म्हशेडी

अजून थोडं पुढे आल्यावर आपण गडावर officially चढायला सुरुवात करतोय अशी जाणीव झाली.. जुन्नर वनविभागाने लावलेल्या एका board वर दिलेली किल्ल्याची माहिती वाचून किल्ल्याला 'निंबगिरी' पण म्हणतात असं लक्षात आलं.. ह्या articleची footnote ह्याच board वरून copy करण्यात आली आहे..

दुपारच्या ऊन्हात ☀️ खडी चढाई करत पायऱ्यांपर्यंत पोहचण्यातच 😦 'हा कमीत-कमी पर्वती इतका तरी छोटा नाही' हे लक्षात आलं होतं.. आणि समोर सरसगड / सालोटा किल्ल्याची आठवण करून देणाऱ्या पायऱ्या बघून अजून घाम फुटत होता 😥.. त्यात शेजारी हनुमंतगड चढायला दिसणाऱ्या वाटेला लागायला परत ह्या उतरायच्या म्हणजे "अवघड आहे" म्हणायची 😒 वेळ आली होती.. so, निमगिरी छोटा आहे, पण जर दिवसातला दुसरा म्हणून करायचा असेल, तर थोडा 'किती वाजलेत?' ⏲️ ह्याचा पण विचार करायला हवा.. शेजारची गुहा बघून झाल्यावर, एकच आशेवर वर चढत होतो, 'वरूनच शेजारी जायला वाट असली, तर बरं होईल' 🤗..

प्रत्येक ४ पायऱ्या चढल्यावर क्षणभर विश्रांती 😌 घेत थोड्या वेळात कधीकाळी असलेला (आज नाहीये) दरवाजा आला.. पण जीवात जीव तेव्हा आला 🥳, जेव्हा मागून एक वाट हनुमंतगडाकडे जाते आहे, ह्याचा साक्षात्कार झाला 👏.. पहारेकऱ्याच्या देवडीत एक वेगळी गोष्ट बघायला भेटली ती म्हणजे पाण्या साठी व्यवस्थित काढलेली वाट / खोदलेली चर आणि वरच्या दिशेला बोगद्यागत कोरलेल्या / खोदलेल्या पायऱ्या.. गडावर पुढे काही पाण्याचे टाके बघून आम्ही मंदिराच्या आडोश्याला थोडीफार जी सावली भेटली, तिथे ठाण्याहून आलेल्या अजून २ जणांसोबत गप्पा मारत भरपूर वेळ घालवला / waste spend केला.. मंदिरात एक शिवलिंग आणि एका दगडावर दोन्ही बाजूला हत्ती 🐘 असलेली गजलक्ष्मीची मूर्ती आहे.. अजून पुढे एक मूर्ती बघायला मिळते आणि थोडं वर गेल्यावर २ कबरी दिसतात..

परत येऊन हनुमंतगड चढायला सुरुवात केली.. ह्या गडावर बघायला काही नाही.. फक्त देव दोंड्या ची डोंगररांग ह्या गडामुळेच निमगिरी हून नव्हती दिसत, ती स्पष्ट आणि zoom 🔍 करून बघितल्यासारखी दिसत होती.. परततांना खिंडीत विनीत दाते भेटले आणि त्यांनी सांगितलं तेव्हा आमच्या knowledge base 📚 मध्ये रोहिदास, हरिश्चंद्रगड, उधळ्या, भोजगिरी, घोण्या, तेली सुळके, वेताळ, बेळमाची, वनदेव, देव दोंड्या, म्हशेडी ह्यांची भर पडली.. वैभवने shoot आणि edit केलेला इथला video 📽️ (निमगिरी-हनुमंतगड), https://youtu.be/XZ3HgrNq_Os

देव दोंड्या, वनदेव, वेताळ

ह्या परिसरात trek ला येऊन दूध नाही प्यायलो, असं होत नसतं (GMaps location).. बजरंगला 🥛 दूधासोबत ढोकळे आणि घरून आणलेले पराठे फस्त करत वेळ झाली होती "+21 mins" 🚚 🚐 🚌 congestionला tolerate करायची 😟..

civilization - there will definitely be black swan 🦆 type of exceptions to this but most of the major cities 🏙️ all around the world 🗺️ have been established around a large water body, preferably rivers 🏞️.. I have been going पुणे-नाशिक / नाशिक-पुणे for almost 20 years now, but never actually learnt about the rivers / sub-rivers which I used to bridge over.. output of today's study of Google Maps go in pairs like this,
